K-Pop Fan Korean: Words Every Fan Should Know
Fan Twitter, Weverse, comment sections — K-pop fandom runs on a specific set of Korean words that get dropped into English sentences constantly. Tap any word below to hear it spoken.
These words show up in fan chants, comment sections, and everyday fandom conversation.
A lot of fandom vocabulary gets used in English conversations exactly as-is — no translation, no romanization changes. Knowing where these words actually come from (and what they literally mean) makes the whole fandom experience click into place a little more.
Release and Performance Words
New Release
keombaek
Comeback (a new release after time away — from the English word)
Performance
mudae
Stage (used for any live performance, e.g. “their comeback stage”)
Meeting Fans
paensainhoe
Fan signing event
Fandom Identity
Your Favourite
choeae
Bias / favourite member (literally “most loved”)
Being a Fan
deokjil
Fan activities / being deeply into a fandom
You’ve almost certainly heard this next one shouted at every concert and fancam — it’s the single most-used word in the entire fandom vocabulary.
Cheering Someone On
Encouragement
hwaiting
Fighting! / You can do it! (said before anything — a performance, an exam, a hard day)
“화이팅” doesn’t really translate cleanly into English — it’s closer to a mix of “good luck” and “you’ve got this,” and Koreans say it to each other constantly, not just in fandom contexts. Once you notice it, you’ll hear it everywhere.
Fandom Vocabulary Is Just the Surface
Once these words feel natural, you’re closer to actual Korean than you’d think — the grammar and reading skills are the next step. Here’s the system we recommend for building on what you already know.
